Assistive Technology in Inclusive Classrooms
Module 11
Introduction
Assistive Technology refers to the tools, devices, and resources that help learners overcome barriers and participate more effectively in educational activities. In inclusive classrooms, assistive technology plays an important role in ensuring that students with diverse needs can access learning materials, communicate ideas, and engage meaningfully in classroom experiences.
Assistive technology can range from simple non-electronic tools to advanced digital solutions. Low-tech supports such as pencil grips, reading guides, visual schedules, and large-print materials can make everyday classroom tasks easier for learners. Mid-tech tools, including audio recorders and communication devices, provide additional support for learning and interaction. High-tech solutions such as screen readers, speech-to-text software, and specialised educational applications further expand access and independence.
The purpose of assistive technology is not to replace teaching but to support learning by removing barriers that may prevent students from fully participating in classroom activities. When integrated thoughtfully, these tools help create equitable learning opportunities and foster greater independence and confidence among learners.
Inclusive classrooms benefit when assistive technology is combined with effective teaching strategies, accessible learning materials, and supportive classroom environments. Together, these elements help ensure that all learners can participate, contribute, and succeed.
In this module, we will explore different types of assistive technology and understand how they can support inclusive teaching and learning.
