Introduction

Inclusive classrooms recognise that learners may require different types of support to access and participate in learning effectively. Classroom adaptations are thoughtful adjustments made to teaching methods, learning activities, classroom environments, or materials to ensure that all students can engage meaningfully in the learning process.

Adaptations do not change the learning goals; instead, they help remove barriers that may prevent learners from reaching those goals. These adjustments may include providing additional support, modifying instructional approaches, adjusting the pace of activities, or offering alternative ways for students to participate and demonstrate learning.

Teachers can also support inclusion through positive behaviour strategies, clear expectations, structured routines, and well-planned transitions between activities. Such practices create predictable and supportive learning environments that help students feel safe, confident, and ready to learn.

Flexible classroom practices are particularly important in classrooms that include learners with diverse abilities, sensory needs, physical challenges, or differences in attention and processing. By responding proactively to learner needs, teachers can foster greater participation, independence, and success for all students.

Adaptation and Strategies for an Inclusive Classroom

The variability of an inclusive environment needs to address the processing and attention differences of learners. An inclusive classroom may include students with Visual Impairment, Hearing Impairment, Loco-Motor Impairment, and Cognitive Differences.

Learners not only learn in different ways, but they also have unique motivations, interests, personalities, and strengths. To address this variability, providing appropriate adaptations and strategies is an effective way to support participation and learning.

Teachers are encouraged to understand the diverse needs of learners in their classrooms and select suitable adaptations that enable every student to access learning opportunities. The strategies and adaptations suggested in this module can be applied flexibly based on the specific needs and strengths of the learners present in a particular classroom.

Cross-Curricular Connection

Cross-curricular connection, also known as interdisciplinary learning, refers to linking concepts across different subject areas to enhance understanding and make learning more meaningful. This approach helps students build connections between topics and see how learning relates to real-life situations.

For example, if Grade 3 students are learning about mangoes, the same concept can be explored across multiple subjects. In language, students may watch a story about mangoes and then create their own stories or presentations. In art, they may draw or create mango-themed projects. In science, they may observe different varieties of mangoes using their senses, while in mathematics they may explore counting, measurement, or problem-solving activities related to mangoes.

Such connections help reinforce concepts, encourage active participation, and provide learners with multiple opportunities to engage with the same idea through different learning experiences.

Social Narrative

A social narrative is a tool used to help individuals with special needs—particularly learners on the autism spectrum—understand social situations, routines, expectations, and appropriate responses. Social narratives present information in a simple and structured manner, helping learners feel more confident and prepared in different social situations.

They can be used to support transitions, classroom routines, social interactions, and behaviour expectations. Social narrative videos and related resources can be valuable tools in inclusive classrooms, helping learners better understand and navigate everyday experiences.
