Numbers 1 to 10
Week 1
Objective
Children will be able to recognise numbers from 1 to 10.
Prerequisites
Pre-number skills such as one-to-one correspondence, memory skills, and matching skills.
Introduction
The teacher may start the topic with a number rhyme after the usual greetings.
Number song
There is so much fun in a number song
Let’s clap our hands and sing along
Sing along, sing along.
1, 2,3,4,5
Let’s all jump and give a high five
6, 7, 8,9,10
Turn around and jump again.
- As the children sing with the teacher, the teacher shows numbers one by one.
- After introducing the numbers 1 to 10, the teacher can conduct the following activities to ensure that the children recognize the numbers.

The teacher can also use the following play activity to introduce the topic.
Resources required:
- Clay
- Number mat
- Flash cards showing numbers from 1 to 10.
Once they are familiar with the vocabulary, the teacher can:
- show number cards from 1 to 10
- make a number mat with numbers 1 to 10 and ask the children to stand on the number as their name is called out
- instruct the children to jump or hop to the numbers in sequence to reach 10 on the previously drawn hopscotch and
- also provide clay and tell the children to make numbers from the clay.

Activity 1: Roll the Dice
Objective: Children will be able to identify the numbers from 1 to 10.
Importance of the activity for children:
Helps in developing:
- Gross motor skills (bend, pick the dice, hold the card, walk)
- Fine motor skills (pick and roll the dice, hand-eye coordination)
- Cognitive skills (associating dice image with number displayed in the card, concentration)
- Social skills (cooperation, waiting for the turn, playing together)
- Spatial awareness skill (navigating using a mental map)
Resources required:
- Two dices with numbers 1 to 5 and another two with 6 to 10 (one side can be left empty).
- Number cards 1 to 10

Setting for the activity:
The activity can be done indoors or outdoors, depending on the availability of space.
Type of activity: Group activity
Preparation of activity:
The teacher should keep the dice and cards ready in front of the children.
Role of the teacher: Demonstrator and facilitator.
Procedure:
- The teacher makes two groups of 10 children each.
- Children of one group hold the number cards.
- Children of the other group will roll the dice one by one.
- As the child rolls the dice, he/she should find his partner from the other group.
- They both can shake hands and give high fives.
- If the next child gets the same number, he will get two more chances to get his partner.
- This continues till all the children have partners.
- The teacher can add more children if required.
Suggested Variations:
- The teacher can use pictures with numbers on the number cards.
- Bigger dice can be used for clarity of numbers.
Conclusion:
The children will learn to match the numbers.

Activity 2: Catch the Fish
Objective:
To reinforce the concept of matching and identifying numbers from 1 to 10.
Importance of the activity for children:
Helps in developing:
- Gross motor skills (bend and pick the fishing rod, walk, throw the rod)
- Fine motor skills (manoeuvres the fishing rod with dexterity, hand-eye coordination)
- Cognitive skills (associating dice image with number displayed in the card with the number written on the fish, concentration)
- Social skills (cooperation, waiting for the turn, playing together)
- Spatial awareness skill (navigating using a mental map)
Resources required:
- Fish cut outs with numbers written from 1 to 10 (3 sets).
- Flash cards with numbers 1 to 10.
- Fish net.
- Large blue fabric or blue chart paper.
- Paper clips.
- Small sticks with strings attached to magnet (to serve as a fishing rod).

Setting for the activity:
The activity can be done indoors or outdoors, depending on the availability of space.
Type of activity:
Individual or Group activity. (Depending upon the number of children)
Preparation of activity:
- The teacher should create a fishing pond by laying a large blue fabric or blue chart paper on the floor.
- Cut outs of the fish to be made from paper or cardboard. Write numbers 1 to 10 on each fish. Paper clips can be attached to the fish cut outs so that the magnet sticks to the fish.
- Create fishing rods using sticks with strings attached to magnets at the end.
Role of the teacher: Demonstrator and facilitator.
Procedure:
- The teacher should place the fish randomly on the blue fabric or blue chart paper laid out on the floor with the number written on it facing up.
- Number cards from 1 to 10 should be kept with the teacher.
- The teacher picks a number card from 1 to 10.
- A child is called out and picks up the fishing rod.
- The child should be asked to pick the fish with the same numbers. For example, the teacher shows a flash card with number 2, and the child will collect all the fish with number 2 written on it.
- The teacher can ask the child which number she/he picked.
- The activity is repeated till all children get a chance to pick the numbered fish.
Observation:
The teacher will observe if the children can match and identify the number.
Conclusion:
The children will learn to match and identify the numbers from 1 to 10.

Home Activity 1: Paint with Fingers
Objective:
To reinforce the concept of numbers from 1 to 10 through a fun activity.
Resources required:

Setting for the activity: At home.
Type of activity: Individual activity
Preparation of activity:
The teacher prepares a worksheet with numbers written with bold double lines.
Procedure:
- The teacher provides the worksheet to each student.
- Children will use water colours and make fingerprints inside the numbers.
- The next day display the finger painting and celebrate the creativity of the children.
Observation:
The teacher can observe the fine motor skills of the children through the colouring activity.
Home activity 2: An online fun activity – Word Wall – Coming soon
Cross-Curricular Connection:
- In Art and Craft class children can be encouraged to mould clay into numerals and to create collages with paper scraps.
- In outdoor games class, children can be shown an object (for example, pencil, ball etc.) and asked to collect five pencils or three balls form a designated area. The things should be scattered in the area before the activity.
