Week 4 – Sorting by Colour and Size

Students would sort objects and pictures based on colour and size accurately when assorted objects are provided to them.

1. Children know the concept of size (big, medium and small)
2. Concept of matching

The activity can be made (sorting mangoes) kinaesthetic: – 

  1. By drawing 2 trees on the chart taped on the wall. Children pick up a mango cut-out from the basket of assorted mangoes, come and stick it on the trees according to the colour and size.
  2. The trees can also be drawn on the floor with the help of a chalk for conducting the above activity.

Objective: To sort the pictures according to their colour and size and complete the picture.

Importance of the activity for children:

1. Helps in developing:

  1. Cognitive skills (Choosing the right picture according to the instructions provided)
  2. Social skills (Cooperation, waiting for the turn, playing together)
  3. Sorting activities help in developing ADL skills (sorting clothes etc.)
  4. Turn taking.

Resources required: Picture cut-outs

Setting for the activity: The activity can be done indoors.

Type of Activity: Pair or group activity

Preparation of Activity:

The teacher provides a worksheet and pictures for sorting and sticking on the worksheet. (different sizes of flowers, leaves and butterflies)

Role of the Teacher: Demonstrator and facilitator.

Procedure:

  1. The teacher can take a print of the worksheet and cutouts of butterflies, flowers and leaves pictures (Provided as LTM) according to the number of children in the class.
  2. The class can be divided into groups of four.
  3. Each group will be given picture cards for sorting.
  4. The teacher can keep three picture cards, each with a particular colour and size on the table. (For e.g. A small yellow butterfly, a big red flower and a big yellow leaf on the table and children will pick those butterflies and flowers that are matching with the ones kept on the table and sort.

Observation:

The students are made to observe the result of the activity as follows:

  1. Sorting butterflies, flowers and leaves are done according to their colour and size.

Teacher can note down her observations and guide the students accordingly.

Conclusion:

Children would learn to sort pictures based on their colour and shape. 

Objective: To sort buttons based on colour and size from the sensory bin box.

Importance of the activity for children:

  1. Helps in developing:
    1. Cognitive skills 
    2. Fine motor skills (Picking buttons from the sensory bin)
    3. Social skills
    4. Language and communication skills

Resources required: 

  1. Sensory bin
  2. Buttons of different colour, shape and size

Setting for the Activity:

The activity can be done indoors or outdoors depending on the space availability.

Type of Activity:

Individual or pair activity

Preparation of Activity:

The teacher keeps the material ready for the activity.

Role of the Teacher:

Demonstrator and facilitator.

Procedure:

  1. The teacher demonstrates the activity by sorting small red, small yellow and big red and big yellow buttons in different bowls that are labelled accordingly.
  2. The teacher then divides the children into groups and asks the students to sort the buttons based on their colour and size.

Observation:
The students are made to observe the result of the activity as follows:

  1. Once all the buttons are sorted the teacher shows and verbally summarises the work done by the children.

Teacher can note down her observations and guide the students accordingly.

Suggested Scaffolds for Assistance and Practice:

  1. The teacher provides clear instructions for example, the teacher says, “Pick all the buttons that are small and red in colour”.
  2. The teacher provides physical assistance to any child who needs physical support to complete the activity. 

Conclusion:

Children would learn to sort buttons based on their colour and size.
