Reading Resource – Speech & Language Development  in Later Years

I. Developmental Milestones : 8-12 Years

Development during the later childhood years is characterised by growth in abstract reasoning, inferential understanding, metalinguistic awareness, and academic language. The table traces six domains from age 8 to 12 years.

Receptive Language – Under standing 
1.   Difficulty understanding complex instructions or classroom language
2.   Poor comprehension of inferential questions — why, how, what if
3.   Difficulty understanding figurative language — idioms, sarcasm, jokes
4.   Struggles to grasp abstract concepts and subject content
5.   Difficulty following multi-step academic tasks

Expressive Language – Syntax & Grammar
1.  Uses simple or immature sentence structures for age
2.  Difficulty explaining ideas clearly and logically
3.  Limited use of complex sentences — because, although, however
4.  Poor organization of spoken or written language
5.  Frequent grammatical errors affecting clarity

Vocabulary – Semantics & Metalinguistic Skills
1.   Limited vocabulary, especially academic words
2.   Difficulty understanding multiple meanings of words
3.   Poor word retrieval — frequent pauses, substitutions
4.   Difficulty understanding and using figurative language
5.   Limited ability to define, categorize, or explain word meanings

Speech / Sound Development – Phonology
1.   Persistent speech errors affecting clarity beyond expected age
2.   Reduced intelligibility in complex or longer utterances
3.   Difficulty with multisyllabic words
4.   Speech impacting classroom participation or peer interaction

Social Communication – Pragmatics & Metapragmatic Skills
1.   Difficulty understanding social rules of conversation
2.   Poor topic maintenance and turn-taking
3.   Difficulty adjusting language to context — teacher versus peer
4.   Misinterprets sarcasm, humour, indirect requests
5.   Limited awareness of listener needs or perspective-taking

Connected Speech – Discourse & Narration
1.   Difficulty organizing narratives — no clear structure or sequence
2.   Limited details or coherence in storytelling
3.   Difficulty explaining events, ideas, or viewpoints
4.   Struggles with summarizing or retelling information
5.   Disorganized or unclear verbal expression

Academic / School Language Skills
1.   Difficulty with reading comprehension — especially inferential
2.   Poor written expression — limited ideas, poor structure
3.   Difficulty summarizing, answering questions, or note-taking
4.   Struggles with language-heavy subjects — science, social studies
5.   Difficulty using language for reasoning, problem-solving, and learning

Clinical Red Flags – Seek Assessment If:
1.   Difficulty understanding inferential or abstract language by 9–10 years
2.   Inability to narrate or explain events clearly by 9 years
3.   Persistent difficulty with figurative language by 10–12 years
4.   Poor reading comprehension despite adequate decoding skills
5.   Language difficulties significantly affecting academic performance

III. Higher – Order Academic Language

How to Identify
›  Comprehension of Academic Content  —  Understands lessons; answers inferential questions.
›  Explanation & Reasoning Skills  —  Explains ideas and gives opinions with reasons.
›  Use of Academic Vocabulary  —  Uses subject-related terms appropriately.
›  Narration & Summarization  —  Summarizes lessons and organizes ideas clearly.
›  Context-Appropriate Language  —  Adjusts language for teacher versus peer situations.

Red Flags
›  Poor Comprehension  —  Difficulty understanding textbooks or instructions.
›  Weak Expression of Ideas  —  Struggles to explain, justify, or organize thoughts.
›  Limited Academic Vocabulary  —  Poor understanding and use of subject-specific words.
›  Difficulty with Inference  —  Cannot interpret implied meanings or solve problems.
›  Academic Impact  —  Reading comprehension, writing, and learning are affected.
