Numbers 71 to 100

Week 3

Identifies and writes the number that comes before/after a given number and the number that comes in between two numbers (from number 71 to 100).

Children will be able to write the number after, before and missing numbers from 71 to 100.

Prerequisites

Children can form and read numbers from 0 to 100, children can write numbers before, after and between numbers from 1 to 70.

Resources required:

  1. Flashcards from 1 to 100
  2. Colour pencils

The teacher starts the class with the usual greetings. The teacher can then proceed with revising the numbers and ensuring children can form, read, and write numbers from 1 to 100. For this, the teacher can show the flash cards from 1 to 100 and ask the children to identify and read the numbers. The teacher can give ten bundles of colored pencils, each with ten pencils and ten individual colored pencils, and ask the child to form the number and write on the blackboard. The teacher can do this with all children to ensure that they can form, read, and write the numbers up to 100. Now, the teacher can announce that they are going to continue this activity to find the number before, after, and between numbers from 71 to 100. Later, the teacher can show the story video to introduce the concept of the number after and the number before.

Story: Tina’s Number Adventure – Continues

One bright morning, Tina returned to her favorite spot under the big mango tree. She loved numbers, and every visit brought a new adventure. As she stepped onto the soft grass, she noticed something magical – a glowing number line appeared before her, stretching from 70 to 100!

Excited, Tina took her first step onto 70, ready for another adventure.

As Tina stood on 70, her friend, the playful squirrel, scampered over.
“Tina! Can you help me find the number that comes right after 70?” the squirrel asked eagerly.
Tina smiled and pointed ahead. “The number after 70 is 71!”
The squirrel twitched his tail happily and dashed away.

Tina continued her journey along the number line. When she reached 78, she saw Bella the Bunny hopping excitedly.
“Tina! I need to find the number that comes right after 78. Can you help me?” Bella asked.
Tina giggled. “Of course! The number after 78 is 79.”
Bella wiggled her nose in delight and hopped off.

At 85, Tina spotted a bright yellow bird sitting on a branch, humming a tune.

“Tina! Can you tell me what number comes before 85?” chirped the bird.
Tina turned around, looking at the number line. “The number before 85 is 84!” she answered.
The bird flapped its wings and sang a happy melody before flying away.

As the sun began to set, Tina reached 100 and found the wise old owl perched on a branch, watching her carefully.

“Tina, can you tell me which number comes right before 100?” the owl asked.
Tina thought for a moment, then confidently said, “The number before 100 is 99!”
The owl nodded approvingly. “Very good, Tina! You have learned so much.”

Tina smiled, looking back at her adventure. She had helped her friends, practiced her numbers, and learned that every number has a friend before and after it.

With a happy heart, Tina skipped back home, excited for her next number adventure!

Further, in the end, the teacher can show the number chart and point to a number to find the number after and before.

The teacher can proceed with the following activities to reinforce the concept of numbers from 1 to 100.

Objective:
To reinforce the concepts of numbers before and after a number through an engaging and interactive activity.

Importance of the activity for children:

Helps in developing:

  1. Numerical Skills (Number recognition, sequencing, place value)
  2. Cognitive Skills (Memory, pattern recognition)
  3. Gross motor Skills(Squatting, sitting, speaking)
  4. Fine motor Skills (Holding the chit)
  5. Problem solving Skills (Identifying the number before and after a given number)
  6. Language Skills (Vocabulary building, listening, verbalizing the number)
  7. Social Skills (Patience, appreciating others, taking turns, group play)
  8. Emotional Skills (Building confidence in numerical abilities, sense of achievement on completion builds self-esteem, and pride in learning new skills)

Resources required:

  1. Number cards
  2. Each card should have two parts:
    • “I have ________.” (A number from 71 to 100)
    • “Who has the number before/after ______?”

Setting for the activity:

  1. The game can be played indoors or outdoors depending on the space availability.
  2. Students should sit in a circle to easily follow the game.

Type of activity: Group activity

Preparation of activity:

  1. Prepare the flashcards with numbers from 71 to 100.
  2. Shuffle the cards and distribute one card per student.
  3. If there are fewer than 30 students, give some students multiple cards.

Role of the teacher:

  1. Demonstrator and facilitator
  2. Guide students who may need help finding the next number.
  3. Encourage active participation and ensure smooth transitions between turns.

Procedure:

  1. The first student starts by reading their card aloud: “I have 70. Who has the number after 70?”
  2. The student with 71 responds, “I have 71. Who has the number after 85”?
  3. The game continues until all the cards are over.

Observations:
The teacher observes to find:

  • If children are able to recognize before and after numbers.
  • Are children able to listen carefully and respond correctly?
  • Do children need hints or support to find their number?

Objective:
To practice recognizing and writing numbers from 71 to 100, focus on identifying what comes before, after, or in between a given number.

Importance of the activity for children:

Helps in developing:

  1. Numerical Skills (Number recognition, sequencing, place value)
  2. Cognitive Skills (Memory, pattern recognition, recall, positioning)
  3. Gross motor Skills (Sitting, walking, standing)
  4. Fine motor Skills (Holding pencil, strike through)
  5. Social Skills (Patience, appreciating others)
  6. Emotional Skills ( Building confidence in numerical abilities, sense of achievement on completion builds self-esteem, and pride in learning new skills)

Resources required:

  • Bingo cards with numbers from 71 to 100.
  • Markers or chips for covering numbers.
  • Call-out sheet with prompts such as
    “What comes before 75?”
    “What comes after 87?”
“What number is between 79 and 81?”

Setting for the activity:
Classroom desks where children can work individually on the worksheet.

Type of activity: Individual activity

Preparation of activity:

  • Prepare Bingo cards with a grid of numbers from 71 to 100 (in random order).
  • Create a list of questions related to numbers before, after, and between.

Role of the teacher: Demonstrator and facilitator

Procedure:

  1. Distribute Cards: Give each child a Bingo card with a random set of numbers from 71 to 100.
  2. Start Game: The teacher calls out questions such as, “What number comes after 75?”
  3. Marking the Cards: Children mark the correct number on their Bingo cards if it’s present.
  4. Winning the Game: The first child to get a full row (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally) shouts or raises his hand “Bingo!” and wins the round.

Observation:
The teacher observes the children to find:

  1. Are the children able to identify the correct numbers?
  2. Are the children able to answer the number before, after, and between numbers?

Conclusion:
Children learn number sequences through solving the Bingo Puzzle.

  • Language Class:
Children can be asked to speak a few sentences using numbers 71 to 100.
  • Physical Education Class:
    • Divide the class in groups of 10.
    • Assign a number to each child in the group beginning with 71, and give each one a number card. [First group will have numbers from 71 to 80.]
    • When the teacher calls out 76, the child with 75 should say, I come before 76 and the child with 77 should say, I come after 76 and the child with 76 should say, I come in between 75 and 77
    • The teacher should quickly say the numbers and the children’s quick response is appreciated

Assessment:
The teacher can give the practice worksheet to the children, which can be followed by an assessment worksheet.

Check list for teacher:
