Learning Outcome
Recognises, reads, writes, and forms number names and numerals up to 100 using the place value concept.
Objective
Children will be able to form, read and write numbers from 71 to 100.
Prerequisites
Children should be able to identify and write numbers from 1 to 70.
Introduction
Resources required:
- Flashcards from 71 to 100
- Colour pencils
- Number Journal Sheet
- Colour pencils
The teacher can introduce writing through Number Journal. On the board, the teacher shows how the children fill the journal. Further, the teacher will give a number, and the students will complete the task.
Each page has spaces to
- Write the number
- Draw it out
- Colour the number
- Write number name
- Make a number story

The teacher can then proceed with the following activities to reinforce the concept.
Activity 1: Number Writing Relay
Objective:
To reinforce the reading and writing of numbers from 71 to 100.
Importance of the activity for children:
Helps in developing:
- Numerical Skills (Number recognition, sequencing, place value)
- Cognitive Skills (Memory, Pattern recognition)
- Gross motor Skills (Sitting, walking, standing)
- Fine motor Skills (Picking chits, writing the symbol)
- Problem solving Skills affixing the correct symbol)
- Social Skills (Patience, appreciating others, teamwork)
- Emotional Skills (Builds confidence in numeracy, promotes a sense of achievement that boosts self-esteem, and encourages pride in learning new skills)
Resources required:
Chart paper
Setting for the activity:
The activity can be done indoors or outdoors depending on the space availability.
Type of activity: Group activity
Preparation of activity:
The teacher should keep the chart paper ready in front of the children
Role of the teacher: Demonstrator and facilitator
Procedure:
- Divide the children into two groups: Group 1 and Group 2.
- Ask the children to come up with names for each group after discussing with each other. Write the group name on each of the chart papers. On one chart paper, write number 70 and on the other, 85.
- Ask the children to form a line with their group members and hand over the chart paper with respective group names to each group.
- Inform the children that each child should write the next number on the chart paper and hand it over to the next group member. For example, the first child should write the number 71, next 72, and so on. The other group should be starting with 86.
- Encourage the children to finish the relay first among the two groups.
Observations:
- Is the child able to correctly write the next number in sequence?
- Are the numbers written neatly and legibly?
- Is the child forming the numbers clearly and correctly?
Conclusion:
The children will learn to write numbers from 71 to 100.
Activity 2: Memory Game
Objective:
To write numbers from 71 to 100.
Importance of the activity for children:
Helps in developing:
- Numerical Skills (Number recognition, sequencing, place value)
- Cognitive Skills (Memory, Pattern recognition, attention to details, concentration)
- Fine motor Skills (holding a pencil, writing)
- Language Skills (Vocabulary building, listening, comprehension, communication)
- Social Skills (Patience, appreciating others)
- Emotional Skills (Building confidence in numerical abilities, sense of achievement on completion builds self-esteem, and pride in learning new skills)
Resources required:
Flashcards from 71 to 100
Setting for the activity:
The activity can be done indoors or outdoors depending on the space availability.
Type of activity: Individual activity
Preparation of activity:
The teacher should place the flashcards from 71 to 100 face down in front of the children.
Role of the teacher: Demonstrator and facilitator
Procedure:
- The teacher can call out a child and ask the child to pick any two flashcards randomly.
- The teacher should show the numbers on the flashcard and turn it back face down.
- The child should write down the numbers that were shown and also point out their positions by memorising them.
- Repeat this for all the children.
Observation:
- Is the child able to correctly identify the numbers on the flashcards?
- Can the child accurately remember both the numbers and their positions?
- Is the child able to write the numbers correctly from memory?
Conclusion:
The children will become familiar with the numbers from 71 to 100.
Activity 3: Spin and Write
Objective:
To learn to write numbers from 71 to 100.
Importance of the activity for children:
Helps in developing:
- Numerical Skills (Number recognition, sequencing, place value)
- Cognitive Skills (Memory, pattern recognition, attention to details, concentration, creating stories)
- Gross motor Skills (Spinning the wheel, walking)
- Fine motor Skills (Holding the wheel)
- Language Skills (Vocabulary building, listening, comprehension, communication, developing a story)
- Social Skills (Patience, appreciating others, waiting for the turn)
- Emotional Skills (Builds confidence in numeracy, promotes a sense of achievement that boosts self-esteem, and encourages pride in learning new skills)
Resources required:
Spinning wheel with numbers from 71 to 100
Setting for the activity:
The activity can be done indoors or outdoors depending on the space availability.
Type of activity: Individual activity
Preparation of activity:
The teacher should place the spinning wheel with numbers 71 to 100 in front of the children.
Role of the teacher: Demonstrator and facilitator
Procedure:
- The teacher should call out a child and ask the child to spin the wheel.
- The other children should then be instructed to write the number obtained.
- Corresponding to each number, the teacher should ask the child to make a short number story. For example, if the number is 75. The story can be “I went to the shop and bought 75 cupcakes for the party.
Observation:
- Does the child correctly identify the number spun on the wheel?
- Is the child able to write the number clearly and correctly?
Conclusion:
The children will learn to write the numbers from 71 to 100.

Cross-Curricular Connection:
- Physical Education Class:
- Form 3 groups with 10 children each. 71-80; 81-90 and 91-100
- Assign one number to each child in each group
- The teacher says the next 5 numbers to form a group.
- Then calls out a number say 86
- Then 87, 88, 89, 90, and 91 should come forward and form a group and perform an action as instructed by the teacher. E.g. Jump 5 times or swirl two times etc.
- Go back and join the group
- Language Class:
Children can be asked to speak a few sentences using numbers 71 to 100. - Art and Craft:
- Children can form numbers 71-100, 3 each as instructed by the teacher using play dough or can form numbers from old newspaper cuttings.
- After completion, the numbers collage can be displayed in sequence, and each child can read aloud the numbers displayed.
Assessment:
The teacher can give the practice worksheet to the children, which can be followed by an assessment worksheet.
