Story: Raju’s Fruit Shop
In the heart of a village, there was a little fruit shop owned by Mr. Raju. His shop was filled with all kinds of fruits – apples, bananas, oranges, and more. Every day, people from all over the village would visit his shop to buy fresh fruits.
One morning, Mr. Raju was arranging his fruits when a little girl and his brother came in.
She said, “Our mother asked us to get 50 bananas and 40 apples for a party.
How many bananas do you have today”?
Mr. Raju checked his basket. “I have 65 bananas.”
She thought for a moment. “I only need 50. Which is more, 50 or 65?”
(Let’s compare 65 > 50)
Mr. Raju smiled. “Well, 65 is greater than 50, so I have more than enough bananas for your party!”
The little girl’s brother asked, “How many apples do you have?”
Mr. Raju looked at his basket of apples. “I have 38 apples today, Ravi.”
Ravi counted on his fingers. “But I need 45 apples. Is 38 more or less than 45?”
(Let’s compare 38 < 45)
Mr. Raju chuckled. “38 is less than 45, so I don’t have quite enough apples. But you can take all 38 if you like!”
Ravi smiled and took the apples. They thanked Mr. Raju and left for home.
Just then Mrs. Meera entered the shop.
“Hello, Mr. Raju!” Mrs. Meera said cheerfully. “I need some oranges. How many do you have today”?
Mr. Raju checked his orange crate. “I have 54 oranges, Mrs. Meera.”
“I need 60 oranges,” she said.
(Let’s compare 54 < 60)
So, I don’t have enough oranges for you. But you can take what I have!”
Mrs. Meera happily took the 54 oranges and thanked Mr. Raju.
As the day went on, more villagers came in, comparing numbers of fruits. Some needed fewer fruits than Mr. Raju had, and others needed more. By the end of the day, Mr. Raju was happy that he could sell all his fruits.
And from then on, the villagers loved visiting Mr. Raju’s fruit shop, where they not only bought fresh fruits but also learned about comparing numbers between 1 and 70!

The teacher will use Base 10 blocks to compare numbers.
For example: 51 and 57

The teacher can proceed with the following activities to reinforce the concept.
Flashcards: Base ten blocks pictures – Coming soon
Activity 1: Place the sign
Objective:
To reinforce the concept of comparing numbers from 51 to 70.
Importance of the activity for children:
Helps in developing:
- Numerical Skills (Number recognition, sequencing, place value)
- Cognitive Skills (Memory, pattern recognition)
- Gross motor Skills (Walking, holding the chit)
- Fine motor Skills (Picking a chit, placing the chit)
- Problem solving Skills (Identifying the greater and lesser number than chosen number)
- Social Skills (Patience, appreciating others, waiting for the turn)
- Emotional Skills (Building confidence in numerical abilities, experiencing a sense of achievement, and taking pride in learning new skills)
Resources required:
- Paper slips with numbers from 51 to 70
- A sheet of paper
Setting for the activity:
The activity can be done indoors or outdoors, depending on the space availability.
Type of activity: Individual activity
Preparation of activity:
The teacher should keep a box with the slips in front of the children.
Role of the teacher: Demonstrator and facilitator
Procedure:
- The teacher should call a child to the front and shake the box containing slips.
- The teacher should ask the child to pick two slips.
- The child should pick two slips and tell the numbers obtained.
- The child should place the slips next to each other on a piece of paper and draw the < or > symbol between them correctly.
- The teacher should repeat the activity for all children.
Observations:
- The teacher observes whether the child can read and identify both numbers correctly from the slips.
- How accurately the child is able to compare the two numbers and determine which is greater or smaller.
- The teacher notes whether the child correctly uses and places the appropriate sign (< or >) between the numbers.
Conclusion:
The children will learn the concept of comparison of numbers from 51 to 70.

Activity 2: Comparison Relay
Objective:
To reinforce the concept of comparing numbers from 51 to 70.
Importance of the activity for children:
Helps in developing:
- Numerical Skills (Number recognition, sequencing, place value)
- Cognitive Skills (Memory, Pattern recognition)
- Gross motor Skills (Sitting, walking, standing)
- Fine motor Skills (Picking chits, writing the symbol)
- Problem solving Skills (Affixing the correct symbol)
- Social Skills (Patience, appreciating others, teamwork)
- Emotional Skills (Building confidence in numerical abilities, experiencing a sense of achievement, and taking pride in learning new skills)
Setting for the activity:
The activity can be done indoors or outdoors, depending on the space availability.
Type of activity: Group activity
Preparation of activity:
The teacher should prepare a set of 10 questions to fill in the symbol of <,>, =.
Role of the teacher: Demonstrator and facilitator
Procedure:
- The teacher should divide the class into groups of ten children each.
- The teacher should make children in a group sit together.
- The teacher can provide the paper with questions to the first child of each group.
- The first child will provide the answer by filling in the symbol and passing the paper with questions to the next child, and so on.
- Once all the children have completed it, the teacher can verify the answers. The teacher can announce the winning group as the group that completed all correct answers in the shortest time.
Observation:
- The teacher observes how well children understand and apply comparison symbols (<, >, =) between numbers from 51 to 70.
- Attention is given to how confidently each child is able to read the numbers and choose the correct symbol without assistance.
- The teacher also notes the accuracy and speed with which children complete their turn while maintaining focus.
Conclusion:
The children will learn the concept of comparing numbers 51 to 70.
Worksheet: Comparison relay – Coming soon
Cross-Curricular Connection:
- Physical Education Class:
- Each child is given a number card with a number between 51 and 70
- Teacher calls out a child and asks them to tell a number greater than her/his number card. E.g., 52. The child can say any number greater than 52. E.g., 68
- The child with card 68 comes forward
- The teacher says greater/smaller than 68 and the 68 card holder responds accordingly and the game goes on a quick round
- If the child is unable to say the correct answer, he/she moves out of the game.
- The one who stays till the end is the winner
- Language Class:
Children can be asked to speak a few sentences or make number stories using greater than, lesser than, or equal to using numbers 51 to 70. E.g., I got 62 marks in language and 68 marks in math. My score in math is greater than my score in language.
Assessment:
The teacher can give the practice worksheet to the children that can be followed by an assessment worksheet.
