Numbers 11 to 20

Week 2

Recognises Indian numerals and writes comfortably up to 20.

Children will be able to count and write numbers from 11 to 20.

Prerequisites

● Numbers from 1 to 10
● Pre-number skills such as one-to-one correspondence, memory skills, and matching skills.

Resource required:

  1. A Ten Frame
  2. Clay
  3. Rajma seeds

The teacher may start with revision of numbers by showing a few objects / flashcards.

The teacher could use any available objects and start the class. Since the children already know to count up to 10, the same could be revised along with the flashcards to revise the numbers.

Demonstration by teacher:
The teacher uses a Ten-frame for counting and making numbers from 11 to 20.

  1. Place a 10 frame and use clay/rajma seeds to count and fill the frame to make 10.
  2. The teacher shows the frame is filled. So another frame to be kept next to the first frame.

3. “Let’s make 11”. The teacher picks 1 more clay ball/ rajma seed and places in the second frame.

  1. The teacher continues till counting reaches number 20.
  2. Now the Ten-frame to be given to students to count and form numbers.

Objective: The students will be able to count the number of objects picked from the sensory bins.

Importance of the activity for children:

Helps in developing:

  1. Cognitive skills (focus, attention to details, exploring objects inside a bin)
  2. Fine motor skill (digging, grasping, and manipulating small objects in the sensory bin)
  3. Tactile perception skill (identify objects by feeling)
  4. Social skills (playing together in a group)
  5. Emotional skills (sense of achievement on completion builds self-esteem)

Resources required:
1. A plastic bin
2. Sand, rice or beans to fill the bin

Setting for the activity:
The activity can be done indoors or outdoors depending on the availability of space.

Type of activity: Group activity

Preparation of activity:
The teacher should keep the sensory bin ready with hidden objects such as buttons, small balls, paper clips etc.

Role of the teacher: Demonstrator and facilitator

Procedure:

  1. The teacher sets up the sensory bin on a table or a designated play area. A mat or tray can be used to contain any spills.
  2. Tools like scoops, spoons, or tweezers can be provided to help children dig and find objects.
  3. The teacher demonstrates the activity by digging out the objects within the time allotted.
  4. Later the objects need to be counted and the number card corresponding to the number of objects will be placed.
  5. Alternatively the child can count and write the number of objects they found on a worksheet.

Observations:

  1. The children will observe while counting their objects and when their peers are counting.
  2. The teacher will observe how well the children are able to count the objects.

Suggested Variations:

  1. The children can count and sort the objects they find.
  2. As children find objects, they can talk about what they’ve discovered.
  3. Use number cards to find and sequence in order within their group.

Conclusion:
The children will learn to count the numbers in sequence.

Objective:
Practice writing numbers from 11 to 20.

Importance of the activity for children:

Helps in developing:

  1. Cognitive skills (focus, attention, working memory, mechanics of writing)
  2. Fine motor skill (holding a pencil and writing, gripping)
  3.  Visual discrimination skills (recollecting visual symbols while writing)
  4. Social skills (playing together in a group)
  5. Emotional skills (sense of achievement on completion builds self-esteem)

Resources required: Worksheet

Setting for the activity:
The activity can be done in the classroom.

Type of activity: Individual activity

Preparation of activity:
The teacher keeps the worksheet ready for children.

Role of the teacher: Demonstrator and facilitator

Procedure:

  1. The teacher distributes the worksheet to the children.
  2. The students use a crayon or a pencil to write.

Observation:

  1. The children will observe numerical symbol while writing the numbers.
  2. The teacher will observe how well the children are able to write the numbers.

Conclusion:
Children would learn to read and write the numbers from 11 to 20.

Objective:
To match the puzzle pieces by counting the pictures and matching them to the corresponding numbers.

Importance of the activity for children:

Helps in developing:

  1. Cognitive skills (focus, attention, recall while matching)
  2. Fine motor skill (gripping, holding and moving while matching)
  3.  Visual discrimination skills (recollecting visual symbols while matching)
  4. Social skills (playing together in a group)
  5. Emotional skills (sense of achievement on completion builds self-esteem)

Resources required: Puzzles (11 to 20)

Setting for the activity:
The activity can be done in the classroom.

Type of activity:
Group/pair activity depending upon the puzzles sets.

Preparation of activity:
The teacher should have the puzzles ready.

Role of the teacher: Demonstrator and facilitator

Procedure:

  1. Split the class into small groups.
  2. Distribute the puzzles.
  3. Demonstrate how to match the pictures with the corresponding number.
  4. Instruct the children to proceed with the matching process.

Suggested Variation in the activity:

  1. After matching the puzzle pieces to the numbers, the teacher can ask the students to create a short story or description based on the pictures. This encourages creativity and narrative skills.
  2. The teacher can set a timer and challenge the children to complete the matching activity within a certain timeframe.

Observation:

  1. The children will recall numerical symbol while matching with the objects.
  2. The teacher will observe how well the children are able to do the matching exercise.

Conclusion:
Children would learn to count and match the numbers from 11 to 20.

  1. Art and Craft:
Clay or collage activity of forming numbers.
  2. Physical Education:
Treasure hunt activity. Each child should pick a card where a number and the object to be collected is written. Example: 5, Collect five leaves. Each card should have a number between1 to 20 written on it. Numbers can be repeated. Required objects should be spread around in the play area. When the whistle goes the children should start collecting and after a specified time, the whistle goes again and the teacher can check whether each child has collected the required number of objects.

Check list for teacher:
