WASHING HANDS
ADL
Objective:
Child will be able to relate to the steps of cleaning hands |
Estimated time to create the LTM:
2 to 3 hours
Materials required for activity:
- 8.5 inches by 11 inches cardstock – 3 pieces
- Popsicle stick – 2
- Glue dots or hot glue
- Scissors
- Xacto knife for creating the slit (scissors can be used if xacto knife not available)
- Color pencils or oil pastels
Preparation of Activity:
Keep the material ready and if you are using hot glue, ensure that the hot glue is heated appropriately and ready for use.
Procedure:
- Place your hands on cardstock and draw the outline.
- Cut around the outline. You need one left palm and one right palm outline.
- Glue popsicle stick on both hands. In one hand glue the popsicle sticks over the hand and on the other one glue the stick under the hand (look at reference slide below)
- Using one cardstock draw a tap of running water as shown in the picture (refer to the picture in the slide below)
- Using a scissors or knife make a slit for the running water. Here is where the paper hands will get inserted to achieve the tactile aspect of rinsing hands.
- Use the remaining cardstock for making the dirt or germs. Draw and cut circles of various colors as shown in the pictures (look at reference pictures in the slide below)
- Draw the soap and soap dispenser and outline with a black marker and cut around the outline (look at reference pictures in the slide below)
- Color all the pieces using your imagination.
Note: First draw all pieces in pencil and then when satisfied with result draw over it with a black marker pen.
Important Tips:
Note how much to cut to make the slit. It should be big enough to insert the mechanical paper hands.
Draw the tap towards the upper left hand corner of the cardstock so that there is enough room to make the slit around the running water.
Precautions:
Please do not touch the glue when it is hot in the glue gun and scissor and cutter to be used carefully.
Troubleshooting:
If materials are not available we can apply glue on the chart paper and stick sand on it.
Notes to the Teacher:
- You can personalise this with the child’s picture.
- Age appropriate pictures can be used.
- You can use cardboard instead of chart paper.
- You can make a visual schedule to show the steps
Using the LTM:
Follow the steps shown blow and use the LTM to demonstrate cleaning hands using soap. Let the children also use the LTM to reinforce learning.
