Alphabets

i) a- j

Let us learn the letters from ‘a’ to ‘j’ in Braille format, which are formed by the first 10 letters. The upper dots are 1 and 4, and the middle dots are 2 and 5. See the following display.

ii) k- t

The second ten Braille letters of the alphabets from ‘k’ to ‘t’, are formed by adding dot 3 to each of the first ten letters. Thus, k is formed by adding dot 3 to a, i by adding dot 3 to b, and so on.

iii) u- z (without w)

The letters u, v, x, y, and z are formed by adding dots 3 and 6 to the first five letters. Thus, u is formed by adding dots 3 and 6 to ‘a’, and so on. The letter ‘w’ does not fit into this pattern.

iv) w

The letter w is formed by a combinations of dots 2-4-5-6

Numeral

There are no special Braille symbols for cardinal numbers, but a numeric indicator is used to indicate the numbers. The numerals 1 to 9 are expressed with the letter keys ‘a’ to ‘i’, preceded by a numeric indicator.

The number zero (‘0’) is expressed by the letter ‘j’.

The numeric indicator is a combination of the dots 3-4-5-6 as seen below.
