What is the Equipment?

Rope Bridge is an outdoor play and therapy structure made using strong ropes, side supports, and walking planks or a stable base. Children walk from one end to the other while holding support ropes or railings for balance and safety.

What is the Equipment?

Unlike traditional rope bridges that shake heavily, this bridge is designed with extra stability, a wider walking space, hand support, and a low height so that young children and children with special needs can safely use it with assistance if needed.

How to Make the Equipment?

  • Planning & Layout
    • Bridge Length: 3.0 m (10 ft)
    • Bridge Width: 0.6–1.1 m (2–3.5 ft)
    • Clear Height Above Ground: 2.4 m (8 ft)
    • Foundation Depth: 600 mm below ground level
    • Mark the positions of the front and rear support frames and ensure adequate clearance around the bridge for safe use.
    • Accessibility Modifications
      • Provide sufficient bridge width for assisted walking.
      • Use anti-slip wooden planks or apply a rubberized anti-slip coating.
      • Install continuous side support chains or handrails on both sides.
      • Maintain controlled bridge movement to improve stability.
      • Ensure adequate visual contrast on walking surfaces.
  • Fabricate the Frames
    • Use 75 × 75 mm or 80 × 80 mm MS Square Hollow Section (SHS)
    • Frame Components
      • Front Arch Frame
        • Left Leg: 3.0 m
        • Right Leg: 3.0 m
        • Top Cross Header: 1.0 m
      • Back Arch Frame
        • Left Leg: 3.0 m
        • Right Leg: 3.0 m
        • Top Cross Header: 1.0 m
      • Connecting Member
        • Overhead Horizontal Beam: 3.1 m
      • Weld properly and ensure alignment
    • Steel Cutting Schedule
      • Pipe/SHS 1 (6.0 m)
        • Cut 1: 3.0 m Front Arch Left Leg
        • Cut 2: 3.0 m Front Arch Right Leg
      • Pipe/SHS 2 (6.0 m)
        • Cut 1: 3.0 m Back Arch Left Leg
        • Cut 2: 3.0 m Back Arch Right Leg
      • Pipe/SHS 3 (6.0 m)
        • Cut 1: 3.1 m Overhead Connecting Beam
        • Cut 2: 1.0 m Front Arch Cross Header
        • Check Cut 3: 1.0 m Back Arch Cross Header
        • Remaining 0.9 m to be used as underground anchor members.
      • Safety Features
        • Weld Grind and smooth all sharp edges.all 4 sides
        • Ensure complete welds at all joints.thickness: minimum 3 mm
        • Use the remaining 0.9 m steel to fabricate underground anchor fins or cross-members for improved concrete grip.
        • Inspect all welds before installation.
  • Install the Frames: Each leg shall be embedded 600 mm into reinforced concrete foundations.
    • Recommended footing size:
      • 450 × 450 × 600 mm minimum per leg
    • Installation Procedure
      • Excavate foundation pits.
      • Position the arch frames accurately.
      • Verify vertical alignment using a spirit level.
      • Cast concrete around embedded portions.
      • Allow concrete to cure adequately before loading.
    • Safety Note: The structure shall remain stable without noticeable sway, tilting, or rotation during use.
  • Prepare Walking Surface
    • Wooden Planks
      • Recommended dimensions:
        • Width: 100–150 mm (4–6 in)
        • Thickness: 25–40 mm
        • Length: To suit bridge width
      • Plank Arrangement
        • Gap between planks: 120–150 mm (5–6 in)
        • All planks shall be evenly spaced.
        • Surface Safety
          • Smooth all edges and corners.
          • Apply anti-slip paint or rubber coating.
          • Use bright visual markings for improved visibility.
    • Chain System
      • The bridge deck shall be supported using:
        • Two parallel load-bearing chains running along the left and right sides.
        • Chains shall carry the full plank load.
      • Each plank shall be securely clamped or bolted directly to both chains to prevent:
        • Sliding
        • Tilting
        • Rotation
        • Flipping
      • Tensioning System
        • Install drop-forged turnbuckles at chain termination points to:
          • Adjust chain tension.
          • Maintain uniform deck level.
          • Compensate for future chain stretch.
    • Assembling the Bridge Deck
      • Position the two load-bearing chains parallel to each other.
      • Install turnbuckles at both ends.
      • Attach wooden planks directly to the chains using suitable clamps, brackets, or bolted connections.
      • Verify uniform plank spacing.
      • Tighten turnbuckles until the desired bridge profile is achieved.
  • Important: The bridge should exhibit controlled and predictable movement only. Excessive swinging, twisting, or bouncing shall not be permitted.
    • Handrails and Support
      • Provide continuous hand support on both sides using:
        • Side support chains
        • Rope handrails
        • Steel pipe handrails (optional)
      • Additional Safety Features
        • Install soft protective padding around exposed steel members if required.
        • Ensure all support elements are free from sharp edges.
    • Accessibility Requirements
      • Users should be able to:
      • Hold both sides comfortably.
      • Walk with assistance when necessary.
      • Pause safely while crossing.
      • Maintain balance with continuous hand support.

How to Use the Equipment:

A. Basic Usage
Children walk from one end to the other by stepping on the suspended bridge, maintaining balance by holding onto the support ropes.
