Working Model of a Clock

To teach children how to tell the time by looking at the clock.

Estimated time to create the model of a Clock

60 to 90 minutes

Materials required for creating the model of a Clock

  1. Thermocol sheet
  2. Scissors
  3. Fevistick / hot gum
  4. Pencil, scale, eraser
  5. Board marker
  6. Wooden spoons
  7. Number cutouts
  8. Board pins
  9. Colour papers
  10. Cutter
  11. Old clock minutes/hour hand sticks
  12. Daytime and night pictures

Preparation for activity

Keep all materials ready in advance. Teachers can select in advance the pictures/flash cards for some activities that are to be done at a specified time of a day, such as getting up, brushing teeth etc.

Procedure

  • Take a thermocol sheet, mark a circle of diameter 28 cm and radius 14 cm.
  • Cut the thermocol using a cutter.
  • Using coloured sheets, cover the thermocol and paste numbers in a circular manner like a clock.
  • Between every two hour-markings, draw four lines each to mark the minutes using a Board marker.
  • Place old clock-needles at the centre of the clock and rotate them.
  • To teach the concept of minutes, take wooden spoons and paste/write numbers on them.
  • Insert the minute spoon into the sides of the thermocol at each hour mark, on the clock. For example, at 2 insert a spoon with the number 10 to show the exact time.

Important Tips

  1. This model will help children learn how to read clocks and identify time. To make children understand the concept of time, such colourful analogue clocks are the best way to teach.
  2. While using this model, the teacher should focus on the fundamentals of the clock. Focus on hours before minutes. Using morning/afternoon/evening/night pictures, the teacher can tell the time to children. This will make them understand which part of the day is at what time.

    Using the Learning Teaching Material

Teachers can use this model to help children in identifying the short hour hand and long minute hand, counting by fives for minutes – 60 minutes in an hour. Relate times to daily events, such as “lunch is at 12:00 noon” or “bedtime is at 8:00 pm”, etc
