Colour sorting board
Objective
To guide teachers in creating a Colour Sorting Board for all kinds of communication and sensory disorders.
Estimated time to create the model for single digit tree
30 to 35 minutes
Materials required for creating the model for single digit tree
- Hard Cardboard
- Cello tape
- Thick sheet
- KG sheets
- Zip lock pouch
- Cutter
- Printout of different colorful items
- Pencil, scale, eraser, shapers
- Colour pens
- Glue drops or Fevicol
- Scissors
- Felt paper (optional)
Preparation for activity:
Keep all materials ready in advance. If you are using this game for sensory disordered children, then use felt papers.
Procedure
- Prepare the Base Board using a rectangular cardboard sheet and cover it completely using plain or colored paper.
- Collect the printout of pictures of various colored items. Cut them into small pieces and store them in a zip lock pouch to keep them organized.
- Using KG cardboard, make Color Pouches cut out six square or rectangular pouches, each sized approximately 3×3 inches.
- Fold 1 cm of the edge on three sides of each pouch to create flaps for sticking.
- Stick a 2×2 inch square of coloured paper on each pouch. Use different colours for each pouch. This will help indicate which pouch corresponds to which color.
- Paste the Pouches one by one in line, using Fevicol, leaving the top side open. This allows children to drop the matching image cards inside.
- Attach Label Holders using small rectangular tags as holders for labels.
- Label the Pouches with the name of the colour. Cut small rectangular tags and label them with color names like “Red”, “Blue”, “Yellow”, “Green”, “Black”, “Orange”, etc.
- Write the labels in your desired language or the language the children are learning. Paste them below each coloured pouch to hold the corresponding colour name tag.

Important Tips
- Use textured coloured papers (e.g., felt for red, sandpaper for blue).
- Ensure high contrast between background and coloured items by using bold, bright shades.
- Simplify instructions and use visual aids.
- Use picture-based instructions with minimal words.
- Show step-by-step demo cards or visual sequence charts.
- Use symbols or icons (e.g., a red apple = red colour).
- Use sign language gestures for each colour if children are hearing impaired.
- Let children take their time to analyze and learn. Don’t correct too quickly. Praise efforts, not speed.
Notes to the Teacher
The Colour Sorting Board is a simple, interactive, manipulating and inclusive classroom tool designed to help children identify, recognize, and differentiate between colours in a playful manner. This hands-on activity promotes both – cognitive and motor development while building early classification and sorting skills. If teachers encourage students to perform this activity in groups, then it will help indicate developing communication skills and establish teamwork spirit.
Using the Learning Teaching Material
The teachers can make this Board and first demonstrate the Sorting activity; this will help students to learn about the activity to be done.
