The teacher starts the class with usual greetings. The teacher can then proceed with revising the numbers from 1 to 50 by showing flashcards and asking the children to identify the numbers.
The teacher can have children practice counting from 1 to 50 and encourage them to say numbers aloud to reinforce their memory.
- To start with, the teacher has 5 bundles of 10 straws or colour pencils each, along with some individual straws or colour pencils.
- The teacher should explain that each bundle represents 10 and each individual colour pencil represents 1.
- Let us now build 51. The teacher shows them 5 bundles of coloured pencils and one individual colour pencil and explains that 5 bundles mean 50 and, combined with 1 pencil, it makes 51. That is, there are 5 tens and 1 one, making the number 51.
- The teacher can also use Base 10 blocks and build the numbers.
- The same can be done for 52, 53, up to 59.
- To show 60, the teacher adds one ‘ones’ to 59. That makes 5 tens and 10 ones.
- The teacher shows how 10 ones will now form a group and become a bundle of 1 ten to make 60.
- The same continues until number 70 is formed.
- To check understanding, the teacher can call one child and give him or her 5 bundles and 4 individual pencils. The child should count the bundles and individual pencils, recognize the number as 54, and then identify the flashcard with 54 written on it. This activity should be repeated with all the children until they are able to confidently understand and identify the numbers.
- To help the children become familiar with counting, the teacher can distribute flashcards from 51 to 70 and have the children recite their numbers in an order like a rhyme.
- This activity can be repeated to help children become familiar with the order of numbers. It offers a fun and engaging way to practice counting while also helping children recognise and become familiar with numbers.
- The teacher can proceed with the following activities to reinforce the concept.
