Numbers 1 to 10

Week 1

Children will be able to recognise numbers from 1 to 10.

Prerequisites

Pre-number skills such as one-to-one correspondence, memory skills, and matching skills.

The teacher may start the topic with a number rhyme after the usual greetings.

Number song

There is so much fun in a number song
Let’s clap our hands and sing along
Sing along, sing along.
1, 2,3,4,5
Let’s all jump and give a high five
6, 7, 8,9,10
Turn around and jump again.

  • As the children sing with the teacher, the teacher shows numbers one by one.
  • After introducing the numbers 1 to 10, the teacher can conduct the following activities to ensure that the children recognize the numbers.

The teacher can also use the following play activity to introduce the topic.

Resources required:

  1. Clay
  2. Number mat
  3. Flash cards showing numbers from 1 to 10.

Once they are familiar with the vocabulary, the teacher can:

  1. show number cards from 1 to 10
  2. make a number mat with numbers 1 to 10 and ask the children to stand on the number as their name is called out
  3. instruct the children to jump or hop to the numbers in sequence to reach 10 on the previously drawn hopscotch and
  4. also provide clay and tell the children to make numbers from the clay.

Objective: Children will be able to identify the numbers from 1 to 10.

Importance of the activity for children:

Helps in developing:

  1. Gross motor skills (bend, pick the dice, hold the card, walk)
  2. Fine motor skills (pick and roll the dice, hand-eye coordination)
  3. Cognitive skills (associating dice image with number displayed in the card, concentration)
  4. Social skills (cooperation, waiting for the turn, playing together)
  5. Spatial awareness skill (navigating using a mental map)

Resources required:

  1. Two dices with numbers 1 to 5 and another two with 6 to 10 (one side can be left empty).
  2. Number cards 1 to 10

Setting for the activity:
The activity can be done indoors or outdoors, depending on the availability of space.

Type of activity: Group activity

Preparation of activity:
The teacher should keep the dice and cards ready in front of the children.

Role of the teacher: Demonstrator and facilitator.

Procedure:

  1. The teacher makes two groups of 10 children each.
  2. Children of one group hold the number cards.
  3. Children of the other group will roll the dice one by one.
  4. As the child rolls the dice, he/she should find his partner from the other group.
  5. They both can shake hands and give high fives.
  6. If the next child gets the same number, he will get two more chances to get his partner.
  7. This continues till all the children have partners.
  8. The teacher can add more children if required.

Suggested Variations:

  1. The teacher can use pictures with numbers on the number cards.
  2. Bigger dice can be used for clarity of numbers.

Conclusion:
The children will learn to match the numbers.

Objective:
To reinforce the concept of matching and identifying numbers from 1 to 10.

Importance of the activity for children:

Helps in developing:

  1. Gross motor skills (bend and pick the fishing rod, walk, throw the rod)
  2. Fine motor skills (manoeuvres the fishing rod with dexterity,  hand-eye coordination)
  3. Cognitive skills (associating dice image with number displayed in the card with the number written on the fish, concentration)
  4. Social skills (cooperation, waiting for the turn, playing together)
  5. Spatial awareness skill (navigating using a mental map)

Resources required:

  1. Fish cut outs with numbers written from 1 to 10 (3 sets).
  2. Flash cards with numbers 1 to 10.
  3. Fish net.
  4. Large blue fabric or blue chart paper.
  5. Paper clips.
  6. Small sticks with strings attached to magnet (to serve as a fishing rod).

The activity can be done indoors or outdoors, depending on the availability of space.

Type of activity:
Individual or Group activity. (Depending upon the number of children)

Preparation of activity:

  1. The teacher should create a fishing pond by laying a large blue fabric or blue chart paper on the floor.
  2. Cut outs of the fish to be made from paper or cardboard. Write numbers 1 to 10 on each fish. Paper clips can be attached to the fish cut outs so that the magnet sticks to the fish.
  3. Create fishing rods using sticks with strings attached to magnets at the end.

Role of the teacher: Demonstrator and facilitator.

Procedure:

  1. The teacher should place the fish randomly on the blue fabric or blue chart paper laid out on the floor with the number written on it facing up.

  6. The teacher can ask the child which number she/he picked.
  7. The activity is repeated till all children get a chance to pick the numbered fish.

Observation:
The teacher will observe if the children can match and identify the number.
