Vocabulary with Picture Card: Measuring Paper Dimensions
Teaching-Learning Process
A. Introduction
- Say: “Today we are going to learn how to measure an object using a ruler”
- Introduce the concept of measurement by showing different objects and measuring tools
- Discuss the importance of measuring skills in daily life and vocational task such as packaging, tailoring, carpentry, retail etc.
- Display a completed sample
- Use visual instruction cards
- Introduce the measuring tape after student is thorough with using a ruler
B. Preparation
- Ensure students are comfortably seated and prepared for the activity
- Arrange students in pairs or small groups for peer assistance
- Distribute rulers, worksheets, and objects on each student’s desk/work area
- Demonstrate correct use of measuring tools
- Display visual instruction cards
- Keep completed samples ready for reference
C. Procedure
- Introduce the ruler and measuring tape, explaining their purpose and basic features
- Demonstrate how to align an object with the zero mark
- Discuss the units of measurement commonly used, such as centimetre (cm), millimetre (mm) and inch (in or “)
- Explain that paper dimensions are typically written as Length × Width; for an example, 10 cm ×6 cm
- Demonstrate how to hold a ruler or a measuring tape properly without moving it during measurement
- Show how to read measurements in centimeter, millimeter or inch
- Guide students to measure simple classroom objects
- Encourage students to record measurements on worksheets
- Emphasize the importance of including the correct unit of measurement
- Ask students to compare measurements and identify longer or shorter objects
- Provide opportunities for repeated practice
- Provide support to students who require assistance with reading the scale
- Review measurements together
- Discuss possible reasons for differences in measurements and how to correct them
- Highlight the importance of accurate measurement in workplace and daily living tasks
- Instruct students to organize their work area
- Ensure the workspace is left clean and ready for the next activity

Visual Schedule: Measuring Paper Dimensions
Suggested Variation in Rules and Pace
- Begin with comparing long and short objects before introducing numbers
- Use larger objects for beginners
- Start with whole-number measurements only
- Increase complexity gradually by introducing different units
- Provide additional time and repetitions as needed
Suggested Scaffolds for Assistance and Practice
- Hand-over-hand assistance when required
- Visual aids showing ruler placement
- Step-by-step visual instruction cards
- Verbal prompts and demonstrations
- Color-coded rulers for easier reading
- Peer modelling and guided practice
Suggested Alternative Tools or Adapted Materials if any
- Large-print rulers
- Color-coded measuring tapes
- Digital measuring tools
- Measuring strips with highlighted markings
- Adaptive grips for students with motor difficulties
Safety Instructions
- Use measuring tools appropriately and responsibly
- Avoid swinging measuring tapes
- Keep work areas organized
- Handle classroom objects carefully
- Follow teacher instructions throughout the activity
D. Practice
Guided Practice
- Demonstrate how to place the ruler correctly along the edge of the objects and paper
- Guide students through each step
